Thanks to the efforts of Chris and Manny, we had a fantastic trip to Mudgee for the wine of year awards.

Firstly, the trip was so well organised and planned, a massive thank you goes to Chris and Manny. The accommodation, the show bags, the winery tours, the eating and the big school bus were all tremendous. Thanks for the great effort (and execution).

So, what happened ?

  1. Friday Night
    • Late arrival for some, others had a great meal at the Oriental Hotel
    • The Waratah pub for a few drinks and very garlicie cheese and bacon bread
    • Fight Viewing
    • Roths Winebar - so good - thanks Mandy. If you are in Mudgee you have to make it to Roths. Great wine, food, cheese platters and service.
    • Woolpack Hotel for more drinks, pool and watching fights
    • More Fight Viewing
    • Sleep
  2. Saturday
    • The great tour begins on Peter Bones's Bus
    • First Stop at Country Comfort for Cooks Lot tastings. There is also a great chocolate and olive tasting room
    • Off to Blue Wren for tasting and the Wine of the Year Awards.  The White of the Year went to Yallock Stephanie's Dream Chardonnay supplied by Adrian and Cheryl. The Red Wine of the Year went to the Annie's Lane Coppertrail Shiraz supplied by Michael and Lee-Anne. Host of the Year went to Sally and Campbell and the Annie's Lane took out the Wine of the Year.
    • Off we then went to Lowes Vineyard where David Lowe gave a great tour of the vineyard and then the winery. His organic methods are really true to the heart and it shows in the great wines that he makes. The Lowe Zinfandel is an absolute cracker - if you can get any, then grab it eagerly.
    • The afternoon was capped off with a trip to Burnbrae Estate where some wonderful banter occurred and some great wines tasted. Their muscats were sensational.
  3. Saturday Night
    • After tasting the wine of the year back at the Horatio Motor Inn, we headed back into Mudgee for tea.
    • Great Service, great food and great wines were consumed at the Wineglass bar and Restaurant.  Pricey, but worth it.
    • The stayers kicked on, heading back to Roths for some blind tastings
  4. Sunday
    • Breakfast was consumed at the Butchery Cafe - food was A1
    • The group then headed off to Peiter van Gent where Roy gave us a vineyard and winery tour. We did some wine tasting out of the barrel of their Matrix Chardonnay, comparing the affect of American oak and French oak on the process. Very interesting and informative. The great wines there were the finished Matrix Chardonnay, their cab sav was a cracker and of course the ports.
    • Off home we all went
So that was it, a great weekend, great wine, great friends and sensationally organised,
