In a closely fought contest, the "Brilliant" and "Yummish" McLeish Estate 2004 Merlot has won the 2008 Throsby Creek Oenological Phalanx Wine of the Year. The $25 a bottle cracker was supplied by Manny and Chris who, as the supplying host, collected the trophy for display on their mantlepiece. The McLeish was tasted on the awards night after a flying trip to the vineyard by Michael who had a great chat with Maryanne McLeish about their great wines. The Phalanx hope to visit the McLeish's and present a custom made trophey during their 2009 Wine of the Year trip which will be held in the Hunter Valley. The Top White Award went to the Petersons 2005 Riesling (from Armidale) supplied by Adrian and Cheryl. The Top Red was the McLeish and the Top Sparkling went to the Billecard - Salmon Champagne supplied by the champers queen Sally and her king, Campbell.
